Google Strategy on Gmail

Have you ever asked question to yourself, why Gmail is so popular?
Before even its official launch there are tons of pages and numerous sites dedicated to Gmail. E-commerce sites were used just to get a gmail account. Which is free. People not affiliated with Google has already created Gmail compatible software components. You can see how desperate people are for Gmail after reading some messages at http://www.gmailswap.com.

So what are the reasons behind this hoopla!!!

Is it just because we love Google or is it 1000 MB quota. Answer to first question is definitely positive but it can't be the reason for Gmail's popularity. Also 1000 MB quota is being offered freely already by http://www.rediffmail.com and that has not even slightly decreased Gmail's popularity. And again I would like to remind you that Gmail is beta still.

Answer to all above conundrums is following two factors-
1) People's biggest shortcoming and inclination is to become distinguished from others around them.
2) Google's PhD folks really know great things about complexity of human behavior.

Google very cleverly made Gmail ELITE only by inviting some hardcore techies for beta testing. But Google also provided them with INVITE feature. What that means that these chosen few can invite anybody they like to test Google. Really a great strategic move by Google.

Can you imagine techies to change there email-id which they are using for years for all there contacts for any new service. But Google did it because invited people enjoyed being elite, being separate from others. And therefore they changed their email-ids quickly to @gmail cause it can very easily act as a show-off.

I do not know the exact numbers but I am sure by millions must have signed up for Gmail. A exact-match search at google for "@gmail.com" returned 377000 results.

So even before its launch Gmail is 1/16 of Hotmail. As "@hotmail.com" is returning 6,290,000 results.

Before Defragmentation - Some Tips to Speed Up

Defragmentation is a necessary evil. You can't escape from it. How much you dislike the fact that you need to getaway from your computer while some other program has completely overtaken its activities. Upto the point you can't even play music.

You can play music if your music files are on some other partition other than which you are currently defragmenting. But it will certainly degrade performance.

Execute the following steps before starting disk defragmentation. It will save lots of time.

1) Empty Recycle Bin
2) Empty Recent Files Folder
3) Empty Temp Folder
4) Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder
5) Move all big files to some other partition which you don't use frequently. For example I move my Downloads folder because all it contains is setup programs. Which do not required access once the program is installed.

On Windows 9X folders 2-4 can be found in C:\Windows and on 2000 and XP they are in C:\Document and Settings\%LOGIN_NAME%

Where %LOGIN_NAME% is your login.

If you had never done the above you will be surprised by the speed gain.

Port 445 mystery

Since last few days I was wondering why port 445 is open on my computer. This fact is scary that not only it was open all the time it is also a TCP port. Due to load of other concerns I ignored this behavior after conducting a Trojan scan and updating my firewall. Today I searched on Google for reference and awestruck by the fact that this is a NetBIOS port. I quickly checked my logs. Got some relief after finding no misadventure there.

Reason being, few days before service engineer came and he ridiculously changed settings to enable TCP/IP over NetBIOS. So heres a link from which I obtained information to disable the above.

I know a shortcut though. Simply double click the blinking two-computer icon in your system tray. Yeah which shows the network traffic :). Select properties -> Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Click Properties -> Click Advanced Button in new pop-up -> Select the WINS tab -> Select radio-button disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

One more thing uncheck Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing. As these two were also enabled.

To check above procedure worked or not. Go to command prompt and type netstat -an. I am relieved by seeing 445 is not in front of my IP.

Ad-Sense

Google got lots of business sense. Ad-sense is just a very small part of it. They have extented this service for free and inviting bloggers for sign-up with revenue sharing offer.

No doubt Google is great. But at the time of sign-up with Ad-sense I didn't liked the fact that Google can share my personal information with third parties. Also no information is provided about the extent of information shared.

I always backed Google in all debates. Google is very trustworthy. Despite the fact that they are collecting every information about my searches (by placing a cookie) to the website I am visiting (by Google bar). Above information is for statistics generation which in turn gives me better search results.

Also Google Labs came up with real great tools. I am using Google compute and not to mention Blogspot is part of Google.

But still if Google can remove personal data sharing to third parties. It will be bestest rather than best.

Google folks really are great businessmen rather than technocrat nerds. I guess if Gmail was launched without inviting the choosen few for beta testing, even tough its free and offers 1 GB, it would just had become a secondary dump of attachments for most. But superb strategy, having gmail has become a matter of pride. You are among the choosen few. And capability of inviing others :). I think before starting the service publicly Google would make millions of ACTIVE users. GREAT BUSINESS PLANNING.

GmailSwap is offering a nice service for swapping gmail account in lieu of something cute, funny and good. Earlier beggers got onto ebay and started selling gmail account for money. That was sick. I also posted offers. If I got account I will post the full log of messages to my thread here.

This is Warcraft 3 Site. If you like strategy games, this one is surely recommended. This game is so much good that it will drive you for hours. Everything from effects to game play to storyline is perfect. A word of caution though – “Either finish your urgent tasks before starting this game or set an alarm for every one hour, otherwise time will pass like speed of light".

What Everyone is Thinking?

Everyone who is anyone, who is doing anything. Is thinking only one thing that "whatever I am doing is correct".

Its only in other people's perspective that he/she can be wrong. Some praise the United States for waving war on Iraq. Some (their own persons) scolded them for ringing the alarm without any smoke. Militants are beheading innocents. Which in their own intellect is to save their people and therefore is in accordance with their holy scripture Quran.

But many scholarly Muslims has called this act "Against Quran". Thing is, everyone is right in their mind. In their own sense.

I am wondering what the God is thinking.

If today you are doing one task, on whatever level, your intellect will convince you that what you are doing is perfect for you and people around you. But tomorrow if you switch to some other task (totally unrelated to previous) you will again find yourself convinced that what you are doing is perfect. It is good for you and people around you.

It will be perfect, if we got a vision to see ourselves from others eyes.

Something About Me As a Gamer

Its my destiny to become someone renowned in the gaming circles. Like a tortoise slowly but steadily I am moving towards my destination.

I nearly wasted my first year of college in playing games. Then I realized better part of it. And decided to become a game developer. In my four years of college education I gained ten years of development experience :). Even before receiving my computer science degree I had developed dozens of (those were waste) games with few good DirectX games. Since last one year I am developing J2ME mobile games.

Earlier, I used to play games for more than 16 hours a day (shocked???). I played everything from Pacman to "Prince of Persia - 3D" to Quake and there are so many. Now it seems like a eon ago. I barely gets any time to play them. But I spend a great deal on developing them.

If I had people with me in college. Who got taste for developing games. Today I be having my own game company. But I couldn't found any.

I am someone who is fond of games since childhood. Actually everyone of us play games when we are young. But we left this good habit while growing up. I don't know why people associate games with children. Its such a nice medium to express your aesthetic capabilities and creativity (through game design). Also game development is multi billion dollar industry ($30 B). Game developers push the targeted machines to the limit and thereby enjoy thrills of latest technological breakthroughs with very challenging coding standards. Its great to feel like part of this industry.
